Follow-unfollow and hashtag packs are dead. Here's what is genuinely working for small businesses on Instagram this year.
Instagram growth advice has a short shelf life. Whatever worked when everyone was posting photo grids has mostly stopped working. What follows is what we see making a real difference for small business accounts right now, and what we tell clients to stop wasting time on.
Reels still do the heavy lifting for reach
Feed photos mostly reach people who already follow you. Reels are shown to people who don't, which is how new customers find you. The first two or three seconds decide almost everything. Start with the point, not a logo animation or "hi guys". Something like "Three things I'd never do before painting a wall" gives someone a reason to stay.
Instagram has said publicly that watch time, likes and shares are among the strongest signals for Reels. So aim for videos people finish, enjoy and send to a friend. Keep them tight and cut any dead air. Trial Reels, which show a video to non-followers first, are a low-risk way to test an idea before your followers see it.
Make content people want to send
A share to a friend is a strong signal, and it's more likely when your post is specific and useful. "Which dosa place in your city has the crispiest one?" gets tagged. A checklist for first-time home buyers gets saved and forwarded. Ask yourself before posting: who would send this, and what would they say when they do?
Treat your profile like a search result
Instagram is also a search engine. People type "makeup artist Patna" or "vegan bakery" into the search bar. Put your keyword and city in the name field (not just the username), write a bio that says what you do and for whom, and use clear captions with natural keywords. Your highlights should answer common questions: pricing, location, reviews, how to order.
Carousels are underrated
Swipeable posts hold attention and earn saves. They work well for tips, step-by-step guides, comparisons and myth-busting. Make the first slide a strong promise and the last one a clear next step.
Collaborate, don't just broadcast
Collab posts appear on both accounts, so you reach the other person's audience too. Team up with a nearby complementary business: a photographer with a florist, a gym with a healthy meal service. Also reply to comments quickly, ask follow-up questions and join conversations under other relevant accounts. It's slow and a bit boring, but it works.
Stop wasting time on these
- Buying followers or engagement pods. They damage your engagement rate and bring no customers.
- Massive hashtag blocks. A few relevant ones are enough.
- Posting purely to keep a streak. Filler content teaches your audience to scroll past you.
- Follow-unfollow tactics. Followers gained this way rarely convert, and it can get you restricted.
Turn attention into enquiries
Followers don't pay your rent, customers do. Make sure every profile has a clear action: a WhatsApp button, a booking link, or a pinned post that explains how to order. Reply to DMs fast. Many purchases start with "price?" in a message, and the first business to answer clearly often wins.
A realistic expectation
Steady growth comes from a clear niche, consistent posting and reacting to what your audience responds to. Expect months, not days. If a post takes off, make more like it; if it doesn't, learn and move on. Paid promotion can speed things up once you know which content already works.
Quick answers
How long does it take to grow on Instagram?
Most small business accounts need a few months of consistent, focused posting before growth becomes noticeable. Individual Reels can spike earlier, but steady growth takes time.
Should I buy followers?
No. Fake followers don't watch, share or buy, and they lower your engagement rate, which hurts how your real content performs.
How many hashtags should I use?
A few relevant ones are enough. Clear captions and keywords in your profile and posts now do more for discoverability than a long hashtag block.
