WordPress vs Shopify: Which Platform Is Right for Your Business?

WordPress vs Shopify: Which Platform Is Right for Your Business?

One gives you total flexibility, the other gets you selling fast. Here is how to choose without paying for a rebuild later.

We're asked this by almost every client who wants to sell online, and the wrong answer gets expensive. People pick a platform because a friend used it or because a freelancer quoted a low price, then discover six months later that it doesn't fit how they work. So here is a plain comparison.

What each one really is

WordPress is a free, open-source website system. You install it on hosting you buy, and you can turn it into a service website, a news site, a directory or, with WooCommerce, an online shop. You own everything, and you can customise almost anything, but you're also responsible for hosting, updates, security and backups.

Shopify is a hosted store builder. You pay a monthly subscription and Shopify takes care of the servers, security, checkout and updates. It's designed for selling products, so the shop features are ready from the first day. In return you work within its structure.

The costs people forget

With WordPress, the software is free, but a good host, a premium theme, a few paid plugins (forms, security, backups, speed) and someone to keep it updated all add up. With Shopify, the monthly plan is the start. Apps for reviews, upsells or subscriptions are usually paid monthly, and if you use an outside payment gateway you may pay an extra transaction fee on top of the gateway's own charges. In India you'll typically connect a gateway such as Razorpay or PayU, so ask what the total fee stack looks like before you commit.

India-specific things to check

  • Payments: UPI, cards, net banking and wallets should all work at checkout. Cash on delivery too, if your buyers expect it.
  • Shipping: aggregators such as Shiprocket connect with both platforms. Check pincode serviceability and COD handling.
  • GST invoices: confirm you can produce compliant invoices without manual work.
  • Speed on mobile networks: heavy themes and too many plugins or apps slow either platform down.

So which should you choose?

Choose Shopify if selling products online is the core of your business, you want to launch quickly, and you'd rather not think about servers and security. It suits D2C brands, fashion, accessories, food and gifting.

Choose WordPress if your site is mostly about information and enquiries (clinic, school, consultancy, agency), if content and SEO will be central, or if you need unusual features that a store template can't handle. WooCommerce is also fine for a store when you want full control and have technical help.

And be careful with both: every extra plugin or app is one more thing that can slow the site or break after an update. Build only what you need.

Quick answers

Is Shopify better than WordPress for SEO?

Neither wins by default. Both can rank well when the site is fast, well structured and has useful content. WordPress gives more control over URLs and technical settings, while Shopify handles the basics cleanly out of the box.

Can I move from one to the other later?

Yes, but it takes planning. Products, pages and redirects can be migrated, though design and some functionality usually need rebuilding. It's cheaper to choose carefully at the start.

Which is cheaper to run?

It depends on what you add. WordPress costs are hosting, theme and plugins, plus someone to maintain it. Shopify is a monthly plan plus apps and payment fees. Compare the total for your specific needs, not just the headline price.
