When someone in Saket searches "salon near me", Google shows three businesses on a map. Here is what decides who those three are.
Walk through any market in South Delhi, from Malviya Nagar to Lajpat Nagar, and you will see good businesses that are invisible on Google Maps. Their customers search on their phones, find a competitor two lanes away, and never walk in. The good news is that fixing this costs very little money. It mostly needs time and consistency.
How Google picks the three businesses on the map
Google looks at three things: relevance (does your profile match what was searched), distance (how close you are to the person searching) and prominence (how well-known and trusted your business looks online). You can't change distance, but you can improve the other two a lot.
Step 1: Claim and complete your profile
- Search your business name on Google Maps. If a listing exists, claim it. If not, create one at business.google.com.
- Choose the most specific primary category. "Dental clinic" beats "Doctor". "South Indian restaurant" beats "Restaurant".
- Add your exact address, phone number, opening hours, website and a short description of what you offer and which areas you serve.
- Make sure your name, address and phone number are written exactly the same everywhere: website, Justdial, Facebook, IndiaMART.
Step 2: Reviews, the biggest factor you control
Businesses with more recent, genuine reviews usually rank higher and get more clicks. Ask every happy customer, at the counter or on WhatsApp after the visit, with a direct review link. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and within a day or two.
Never buy reviews or post fake ones. Google removes them and can suspend the listing, and customers can usually tell.
Step 3: Photos and posts every week
Add real photos: your shopfront (so people recognise it), the inside, your team, your products or dishes. Add a few new ones every week. Use Google posts for offers, new arrivals or festival timings. Active profiles tend to perform better than ones nobody has touched for months.
Step 4: Connect your website
A website page that clearly mentions your service and your area helps Google trust your listing. A page like "Dental Clinic in Saket" with your address, map and services supports your Maps ranking far more than a generic homepage. We have written more about this in our guide to ranking on Google Maps.
Common mistakes we see
- Stuffing keywords into the business name, such as "Best Salon Saket Cheap Bridal". This can get the listing suspended.
- Wrong or old phone numbers, so calls go nowhere.
- Opening hours that are not updated for festivals and holidays.
- Ignoring the "Questions and answers" section, where customers ask things anyone can reply to.
Quick answers
How long does it take to show up on Google Maps?
A new, verified profile can appear within days, but ranking in the top three for busy searches usually takes a few weeks to a few months of steady reviews, photos and updates.
Do I need a website to rank on Google Maps?
No, but it helps. A website page that mentions your service and area gives Google more reason to trust and show your listing.
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating and managing the profile is completely free. You only pay if you choose to run ads.
