Map results decide where many nearby customers call first. Here is how the ranking really works and what you can do about it.
Search for "dentist near me" on your phone and Google shows three businesses on a map before it shows a single website. Those three get the calls, the direction requests and the walk-ins. If you're a local business, that little box matters more than almost anything else on the internet. Here's how it actually works.
The three things Google says it looks at
Google has been open about this: local results depend on relevance (does your listing match what was searched), distance (how far you are from the person, or the area they named) and prominence (how well known and trusted you appear, across reviews, links and mentions online). You can't change distance. You can work hard on the other two.
One honest note: nobody ranks "#1" for everyone. The map is personalised to where the searcher is standing. You might be first for people near your shop and fifth for people two kilometres away. So track a few areas instead of chasing a single position.
Set up your Google Business Profile properly
This is the foundation, and most profiles we see are half done. Go through it slowly:
- Primary category: the single most important field. Pick the most specific one ("Orthodontist" rather than just "Dentist" if that's your speciality) and add secondary categories that truly apply.
- Business name: use your real name. Adding keywords like "Best AC Repair Patna 24x7" breaks Google's rules and can get the profile suspended.
- Services and products: list each one with a short description and, where sensible, a price range.
- Hours: keep them accurate, including festival closures. Wrong timings create bad reviews.
- Photos: real photos of your shopfront, inside, team and work. Add a few new ones every month.
- Description: plain language, what you do and where, no stuffing.
Reviews carry more weight than most people realise
Quantity, recency and how you respond all matter. A business with 200 reviews spread over three years often looks more alive than one with 300 reviews that stopped last year. Build a simple habit: after a good service, send the customer your review link on WhatsApp (you can copy it from your profile) and ask politely. Do not offer discounts or gifts in exchange, as Google's policy doesn't allow it. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a human voice. Customers often mention the service by name in their review text, which helps relevance too, so don't script what people should write.
Keep your name, address and phone consistent
Your business details should match everywhere: your website, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Facebook, Instagram and wherever else you're listed. Small differences like "Rd." versus "Road" or an old phone number on one directory confuse Google about which listing is the real one. Spend an afternoon making a list of where you appear and clean it up.
Make your website support the listing
Your Business Profile links to your site, so the site needs to agree with it. Create a page for each location you serve, mention the neighbourhoods and landmarks you cover, embed your map, and keep your contact details in the footer as text (not inside an image). If you serve several areas from one office, write genuinely useful pages for each rather than copying one page with the city name swapped. Adding LocalBusiness schema markup helps search engines read the details correctly.
Use the data Google gives you
Inside your profile, the performance section shows how many people searched for you, called, asked for directions or visited the website. Check it monthly. If calls dip after you changed something, you'll notice early. If "direction requests" climb after you added photos, you know what to repeat.
What to expect and how long it takes
A newly optimised profile can start moving in a few weeks, especially in a less competitive town. In a crowded market with strong incumbents, expect three to six months of steady review collection and content work. Shortcuts such as fake reviews or virtual addresses are risky, and Google has become quite good at removing them.
Quick answers
How long does it take to rank in the map results?
In less competitive areas, improvements can appear within a few weeks. In crowded markets, steady work over three to six months is more realistic.
Can I rank in a city where I don't have an address?
It's difficult. Google favours businesses close to the searcher, so you're better off building strong content and a service-area presence rather than using a fake address, which risks suspension.
Do reviews really affect map ranking?
Yes. The number, recency and quality of reviews, along with how you respond, contribute to how prominent your business looks.
