Google Ads vs Facebook Ads: Which Should Your Business Choose First?

Google Ads vs Facebook Ads: Which Should Your Business Choose First?

Search ads catch people who are already looking. Social ads find people who haven't started looking yet. Which one suits you first?

This is probably the most common question we get from new clients, and the honest answer is "it depends on how your customer decides to buy". The two platforms are not competitors so much as two different doors into your business. Pick the door your customer is already standing near.

The core difference: asking versus scrolling

On Google, a person types what they want: "AC repair near me", "CA for GST filing", "best MBA coaching in Patna". They're actively looking, so your ad meets a need that already exists. On Facebook and Instagram, people are scrolling through friends' photos and reels. Your ad interrupts them. If it's good, it creates interest in something they weren't thinking about a minute earlier.

That's why search ads usually cost more per click but bring people closer to buying, while social ads reach more people for less and need more effort to turn attention into action.

When Google should come first

Choose Google first when people already search for what you sell, and when the purchase is urgent or research-driven. Think emergency services, clinics, lawyers, accountants, admissions, B2B suppliers, repair and installation. If someone searching "water tank cleaning near me" clicks your ad, they probably want it done this week.

When Meta should come first

Start with Facebook and Instagram when the product is visual, emotional or an impulse buy: fashion, jewellery, home décor, food, cafes, salons, fitness, events. It's also the better first choice when you're launching something new that people don't yet know to search for. Nobody types a brand name they've never heard, so you need to introduce yourself first.

Three questions to decide

  1. Do people already search for this? Check Google's autocomplete and Keyword Planner. If there's steady volume, Google deserves a test.
  2. Does it sell better when people can see it? If a photo or a 20-second video does half the selling, lean Meta.
  3. How fast do you need enquiries? Search ads generally produce ready leads sooner. Social often needs a warm-up period.

Mistakes we see with both

  • Spreading a tiny budget over both. ₹300 a day on Google plus ₹300 on Meta teaches you nothing from either. Put your test money on one platform for a proper stretch first.
  • Sending traffic to the homepage. Both work far better with a focused landing page.
  • Skipping tracking. Install the Google tag and the Meta Pixel (with Conversions API if you can) before spending, or you'll only ever know clicks, not enquiries.
  • Judging Meta by lead-form volume. Instant forms are easy to fill, so they attract casual clicks. Add a qualifying question or ask for a call-back time to filter.
  • Eventually, use both together

The strongest setups use each for what it does best. Social ads make people aware of you, Google catches them when they later search, and retargeting on both brings back people who visited but didn't enquire. But that's a second-stage plan. Get one channel producing profitable leads first, then add the other.

    Quick answers

What minimum budget do I need to start?

Enough to collect meaningful data over a few weeks. Very small daily budgets can work for local campaigns, but results will be slow to read and hard to compare.

Can I run both at the same time?

Yes, once one channel is producing profitable leads. Starting with two on a tiny budget usually teaches you nothing about either.

Which is better for a new business?

If people already search for what you offer, start with Google. If it's new or visual, start with Meta and build awareness first.
